例年以上に猛威を振るったインフルエンザに、２月はいくつかのクラスが学級閉鎖になりましたが、ようやく落ち着いてきて、お子さま達の元気いっぱいの声が幼稚園中に響いております。
　さて、いよいよ修了・卒園の３月を迎えます。お子さま達の中にも「もうすぐ小学生だ。」「自分の学年が一つ上がるんだ。」という自覚があり、その意識からか、特に３学期のお子さまの言動一つひとつに大きな成長を感じます。４月、「これから何が起こるんだろう。」と不思議そうな顔をして椅子に座っていた年少組は、スキーウエアの着脱など、身支度がすっかり早くなり、自分達で椅子を並べ、お当番活動を生き生きと行っています。年中組は、友達とのかかわりが深まり、大人数でも役割をきめ、おままごとをしたり、ルールや勝ち負けのある転がしドッジボールなどのゲームを楽しめるようになりました。年長組は、「上手だよ。」「頑張ったね。」と友達を気遣えるようになり、卒園記念製作のオリジナル絵本作りに精を出しております。

　お子さまがご家庭でご父母さま、ご祖母さまからの愛情を十分に受け、安定した精神状態の中で生活が充実したのち、「自立」への一歩を踏み出そうとした時期にやってくるのが『幼稚園』です。そこで受ける幼稚園教育は、後の学校教育の基盤を培うものであると同時に、一人ひとりの一生涯の行動の規範をも規定するといっても過言ではありません。菅原孝悦園長先生が目指す幼稚園教育の基本は、「素晴らしい環境の中での実体験によって自信をつけていく心と体のいとなみ」です。本園は英語、音楽、絵画、運動、文字・かずなど特徴的な教育活動を行っていますが、決して英語の単語やフレーズをただ単に覚えたり、数字を書いたりしているわけではありません。園には様々な国から来たたくさんの外国籍教員がおり、お子さま達は遊びや生活をともにする中で自然と英語が耳に入ってきて、異文化を感じたり、コミュニケーションの手段である英語を身に付けています。「何人休んでいるから、今日のクラスの人数は○○だね。」「たくさんあるカードを一人２枚ずつに分けよう。」などの生活の中のやり取りから、数量の概念を身に付け、足し算･引き算など計算の基礎を培っています。幼児期に育つべき課題を、教師が認識し、お子さま達が実体験の中で興味関心をもってかかわり、自分なりに獲得していけるような環境づくりをインターナショナル山の手幼稚園は大切にしております。
　
　お子さま達は一人ひとり興味関心が違い、獲得する進度や量も違いますので、結果としてお子さまが獲得した「目に見えるできるようになったこと」はご父母さまのご期待どおりではないかもしれません。しかし、たくさんの経験をし、その一つひとつを楽しみ、できることが一つでも増え、得た自信は、必ずその子の大きな成長の糧になり、またたくさんの経験の中で一つでも自分で興味がもち「もってやってみたい」と思ったことは、将来につながるものになるでしょう。幼稚園ではできる限りの「素晴らしい環境」づくりを来年度も目指し、またその環境をみなさまにわかりやすくお伝えしていきたいと思っております。

This past month saw a greater outbreak of influenza than normal, and led to some class cancellations, but things have calmed down and the kids are back to having fun every day.

It is almost time for graduation and the closing ceremony. The children are thinks by “I’ll be an elementary school student.” or “I’m going up another grade.” The biggest growth seems to come in the things the children say. Junior class kids who seemed so lost in April now get dressed by themselves, take care of their belongings, and getting the class ready. Intermediates have formed deeper friendships, working together in larger groups, and deciding roles for things like playing house. They are also doing better to play games with winners and losers like dodge ball. Senior kids are complimenting each other on their picture book crafts with comments like “That’s nice.” and “You did so well.”

“Kindergarten” is the first opportunity for children to establish their independence, away from all of the love and care they received from relatives at home. Kindergarten isn’t just a preparation for the education that will come afterward, it could also be said that it is a person’s first chance to form their personality. The basic educational tenet that our principal Sugawara Koetsu is aiming for is that of “A wonderful environment that, through personal experience, fosters a sense of independent spirit.” Our curriculum features English, music, art, exercise, numbers and letters. However, the children are not simply learning random phrases or writing random numbers. The multitude of foreign teachers give the children a chance to experience natural English and overseas culture, allowing the language skills to sink in naturally. The kids can also determine how many friends are present based on absence, or divide things equally amongst themselves. We here at International Yamanote Kindergarten strive to be teachers that provide children with both the environment and challenges to properly stimulate their mental and personal development.

Each child progresses differently, or holds different interests, so there is a possibility that the visible progress they have made may not be in sync with a parent’s expectations. But even one enjoyable experience can mean a lot of growth for a child, as well as sparking their interest in something they may want to do more in the future. We hope to continue this stimulating environment at IYK, as well as give you more information about it as time goes on.
