ご父母さまのご協力を得て、一学期が無事終了いたしました。４月は「行きたくない!」と泣いていた年少組、新しいクラスや先生に目をぱちくりさせる年中組、「大きい組になった」と気負った年長組の面影はすっかりなくなり、ひと回りもふた回りも成長したお子さま達です。特に、一泊二日のニセコ宿泊体験学習を行った年長組は、自分達で身支度をし、友達と仲良く、そして助け合って過ごす中で「自立の心と思いやりの心」を育みました。ご家庭から離れて自分達で過ごした経験が「自信」につながり、幼稚園での遊びや活動への姿勢にも変化が見られております。

　一学期、お子さま達は幼稚園で絵本、図鑑、そして年長組は辞書とたくさんの本に触れてきました。本園は「『幼児教育は人生でただ一回の教育』であり、幼児期特有の発達期に、一人ひとりの人生の一生涯に亘って発揮され、無限の可能性に生きてゆくために求められる『学力』の基礎を、本園の幼稚園教育を通して培い、育み、伸ばしていきたい」という菅原孝悦園長先生の理念のもと、教育内容を「学力教育（Scholastic Ability）」として、日々Englishや音楽、絵画、文字・かずなど様々な活動を行っております。さらに、大切にしているのは「母国語」で、自分の国の「ことば」を「文字」を使って書いた「文章」を読んで理解する力（読解力）こそが、『学力の土台』になります。そしてこの「読解力」をつけ、外国語を正しく習得する際に必要な「語彙力」をもつけるためにより効果的なのが「絵本の読み聞かせ」です。本は様々な知識や知恵を与え、また本との対話によって、自分自身の幅を広げ、思考を深めてくれます。お子さまにとっては好奇心が刺激され、知識を深め、色々なものの考え方を学び、思考力が鍛えられるものです。本が好きなお子さまは、幼稚園でも一人で絵本を読み、挿絵をみてイメージを膨らませて楽しんだり、文章を自分で詠み進めています。長い夏休み、ぜひお子さまと一緒に本を読み、「読書習慣」を身に付けてあげてほしいと思います。

　さて、明日からはいよいよお子さま達が楽しみにしている夏休みが始まります。ところで、「おねしょ」を気にされているご父母さまはいませんか？おねしょが続く原因としては、①尿を溜める働きをもつ‘抗利尿ホルモン’の分泌が少ないこと、②尿を溜める膀胱の容量が小さいこと、③夢かうつつかの状態になると覚醒障害に陥りやすいこと、が考えられるそうです。幼児期の場合はほとんどの場合、①の抗利尿ホルモンの分泌が少ないことによる「おねしょ」です。個人差はありますが、この分泌が増えてくると、自然に止み、10歳前後にはほとんど見られなくなります。「起こすな、怒るな、気にするな」を心に留め、夏休み中だからといって夜更かしをさせず、十分な睡眠で心と身体の成長を促してください。
　
　最後になりましたが、去る７月８日には、『キッズカーニバル』を盛大に開催していただき、お子さま達だけではなく教職員一同、とても楽しい一日を過ごすことができました。役員、キッズカーニバル係の方々を始め、準備から当日の片づけまで、たくさんの保護者さまが力を尽くされましたことに、改めて厚く御礼申し上げます。ありがとうございました。

With your cooperation as parents, the first term as come to a close without incident. Gone are the children who said “I don’t want to go!” upon entering intermediates, or “I’m one of the big kids now…” upon entering seniors. They’ve all grown immensely since then. This is especially true for the seniors who, after their overnight stay in Niseko, gained more independence, forged deeper friendships, and fostered “Independent and Helping Hearts”. The time away from their families spawned some self-confidence, which shows up in their interactions each day at the kindergarten.

This first term saw the children interact with and use picture books, picture dictionaries, and for the seniors, even dictionaries. At our kindergarten, we follow the tenet that “Kindergarten education is a once in a lifetime chance. Use this opportunity to foster the spirit of each individual child, helping them to realize their unlimited potential as they progress through the educational process.”, as set out by our principal, Koetsu Sugawara. For this reason, the children undertake lessons in music, English, as well as writing and numbers to improve their scholastic ability. The mother tongue is held very dear at our kindergarten, so the children might learn to form their “words” to “letters” to “sentences”. The next aim is to have them be able to read these sentences, and understand them. Reading comprehension is said to be the foundation of all learning.

With this comprehension in hand, next comes the improvement of vocabulary, a necessity for learning a foreign language. This is done through the reading of picture books and short stories. Exposure to different books helps the children to develop and broaden their horizons. Books spark the children’s curiosity, and show them various ways of thinking, which in turn improves their reasoning skills. Children here that love books take to reading themselves, following along with pictures, and reading deeper and deeper into the story. Please take the chance over the vacation to read along with your child, building up their reading skills too.

From tomorrow, the much anticipated summer vacation begins. Are there any parents out there troubled by bedwetting children? Three of the main causes of this problem are : 1. A hormone deficiency. This usually self-corrects by about ten years old. 2. A small bladder. 3. Dreams and reality are confused, and lead to urination. Over the vacation, should your child wet the bed, be sure to follow the motto of “Don’t wake them, get angry, or worry.” Even though it is vacation time, be sure to follow a normal routine and have the children get lots of rest.
It is my last point for this letter, but I would like to take the chance on behalf of all of the staff, and even the children, to thank you all very much for the effort you made regarding Kids Carnival this month. The children were all able to have a wonderful time as a result of your hard work. Thank you very much.
