一学期もあっという間に過ぎ、明日から夏休みが始まります。泣き声が響き、玄関に何人もの教師がいて、手をつないだり抱っこされたりしながら地下で靴を替え、2階のクラスへ行くことがやっとだった年少組。今では“Good morning! 一人で行けるから大丈夫”とその面影もないくらい、元気に階段を上る姿が見られ、上着をハンガーにかけたり、教師に自分から挨拶をする姿は、頼もしささえ感じます。4月はどことなく年少組の面影が残っていた年中組は、すっかりお兄さんお姉さん顔になり、身支度や片付けなどの基本的生活習慣だけではなく、一つ一つの教育活動への理解力と集中力が増し、「次は○○をやるんだ。」と見通しをもって長い時間じっくりと活動に取り組めるようになりました。そして、7月初めに宿泊体験学習を無事終えた年長組は、自立の心と友達への思いやりの心が育ち、先生と友達だけで一日を過ごしたという自信に満ちあふれ、様々な活動に積極的に取り組んでいます。一人ひとりが大きく成長した一学期。夏休み中、家族の方と愛情溢れる中で様々な経験をし、心を充電するとともに、ご家庭で経験されたことを基盤に、また二学期幼稚園で力を発揮することができたらと思っております。

　さて、先日は「絵本の読み聞かせ」で各クラスたくさんのお母さま、そしてお父さまの参加もいただき、ありがとうございました。自分、または友達のお母さま、お父さまが幼稚園で絵本を読んでくれる、という時間はお子さま達にとって特別だったようで、何日も前から楽しみにし、また絵本の読み聞かせの時間は普段とは違う「嬉しい気持ち」が表れた顔で絵本の世界に入り込むお子さま達の姿が見られました。

　近年はものが豊かに溢れ、携帯電話やゲームで遊ぶ機会も多く、お子さま達が自由に、自主的に行動できる時と場が少なく、受け身の遊びが多くなったと言われています。ところが絵本を読むことで、お子さま達は空想の世界を楽しみ、絵本の中で未知の体験をし、豊かな心を育み、遊びを豊かにしていきます。大人はともすると「早くことばや文字を覚えさせたい」「知識を得させたい」といった目的で絵本を選んでしまう時もありますが、お子さま達は様々な絵本を読んで、純粋に「おもしろいから」「好きだから」とたくさんの絵本の中から好みの本を選んでいきます。そしてその中の一冊のストーリーが後に大人になってからも自分に影響を与えてくれる場合もあるくらい、絵本は色々な効果や大きな役割を果たしてくれるものです。長い夏休み、ぜひ絵本をいつでも手に取れる環境をつくってあげるとともに、「これを読んで」とお子さまが選んだ本を心を込めて読んであげたり、その本の面白さ、楽しさを一
緒に感じていただけたらと思います。お子さまが今どんなことを思っているのか、どんなことに関心があるかを知るきっかけにもなるでしょう。

　最後になりましたが、1学期中もキッズカーニバルを始め、ご父母さまにはたくさんのご理解とご協力をいただきありがとうございました。どうぞご家族おそろいで楽しい夏休みをお過ごしください。

The first term has come to an end and vacation is around the corner. In April, the junior class children needed to be carried or have their hand held to change their shoes and finally go upstairs to their class. Now they say “Good morning!” go upstairs by themselves, and hang their jackets up nicely in the classroom. The intermediates, which still showed some signs of being juniors in April, have really matured, being better at personal upkeep and cleaning up. They can concentrate better and keep track of what activity follows which during the day. Finally, the seniors, who finished their overnight stay in July without incident, have learned a lot about independence and empathy. After such an empowering experience, they are taking in activities here at the kindergarten very well. All of the children grew this term. I hope everyone has an enjoyable vacation, does lots of interesting things as a family, and rests well, in order to release all of that newfound energy when they return next term.

Thank you very much for all of the parents that attended “Story Time Week” this past month. Whether it was their own mother, or someone else’s, the children were delighted at the prospect of having a slightly different day from normal. They looked forward to it from days before, and all of them were very interested in the books that mothers brought to read.

These days, as were a society of things, children turn to things like the cellular phone and other forms of passive entertainment. Reading pictures books allows children to take a trip into an imaginary world. They learn new things, get a more well-rounded understanding, and apply it to their play. Adults may look to picture books as another source of expanding knowledge, but children more often than not choose books for the simple reasons of liking their content. Sometimes a story they read as a child can even resonate after they become an adult, and have other good effects as well. Please take a chance over this vacation to have books on hand, and if your child asks, have fun experience reading them together. It could prove a valuable look into the thoughts and feelings your child is having at the time.
