立秋を迎えて熱中症に罹る不安も少なくなりました。ご父母の皆さまには恙なくお過ごしのことと拝察いたします。

　園は一年中で一番教育日数の多い二学期を迎えました。

　国は幼稚園教育の新しい内容と方法を示す「教育要領」の改訂準備にとりかかっていますので今年中には、その方向性は示されることでしょう。

　私の関心事は、日本の「幼児の養育」と「幼児教育」の基本的な在り方について明確な概念を示して、制度づけをして欲しいものだ、と首を長くして待っているところです。

　「子育て」という広い概念だけを振りまわしていても、「何を、どうすればよいのか」が示されないと、新しい時代を見据えての具体的な手だてを立てようがありません。具体的には、幼児教育のカリキュラムの編成にとりかかれないのです。日本の一人の幼稚園長からの切実な訴えです。

　私は新しい時代の子育てや幼児教育で一番大事な「教育課題は、『観察力』を養うこと」と、痛感しています。観察力は、人間が生れた瞬間から本能的に獲得し、学習を重ねて収得してゆく人間としての本源的な能力の一つでありましょう。この観察力の力を強め、好奇心を高めることにより、知能の発達が促されます。

　「ものをよく見る」は、赤ちゃんからの子育ての基本中の基本だからです。「ものの本質を見抜く」と、いう考え方があります。一般に、「頭がよい」ことと同じ意味でいわれています。ものごとを正しく理解するための第一の努力であります。人間関係でも同じことがいえます。相手をよく理解しようとしたら、相手をよく洞察しなければなりません。

　日本の教育で最近見直されている課題の一つに小中学生の「理科離れ」が論議されています。「理科」という教科こそ「観察力」を養う「基本教科」です。それは、学習課題になる自然界の動植物や現象が、目で見て捕えられることに加えて、頭の中で考えられる（抽象）二つの面をかね備えているからです。草花や昆虫や魚などの身近なものに好奇心を向けることによって、それぞれの特徴に気づき、更に本質を見極めようとする「科学的思考」によって、更に物理学や医学にまで考えを発展させることが出来たらとても楽しいことと思います。

　私は、園の幼児教育の中へ「理科教育」の手法と学習課題を積極的にとり入れて、「理科大好き幼児」を育てて参ります。ごきげんよう。

　　We’ve begun to enter autumn, and the risk of things like heatstroke has begun to abate. I hope this summer was one without incident for you as parents. Now begins the second term, with the most school days of the year.
The government has begun the process of amending the course of study for kindergarten education, and we may see action on this before the end of the year. As my personal interest lies in child rearing and education, I am looking forward to the new beneficial parameters they institute.
　　When approaching the concept of raising children, without being able to answer the question of “What should I do?” we cannot hope to put together a plan to lead us into a new age. This is my earnest feeling as the principal of a Japanese kindergarten.
　　It is painfully obvious to me that the main hurdle facing childcare these days is the idea of education to improve “Observation”. The ability to observe is something we gain from the moment we are born, and it proves an invaluable resource to people who excel in their studies. The enhancement of observation, combined with curiosity can be of great benefit to educational development.
　　”Looking at things closely” is a basic skill instilled in us when we are infants. “Looking at things and understanding what they’re made of” is another way of thinking that is often connected to intelligence. It marks the first effort to understand what something is. The same applies to personal relationships. Without observing the people around you, you can’t hope to understand them.
　　Recently there has been some talk about how middle school students have been doing less science at school. Science is a great way to deepen ones understanding of things, as they must imagine the ways that different components work together.
　　I think it would be great if the same curious spirit that leads us to take interest in plants, insects and the like could enhance the capacity for analysis, and maybe even lead to some new ideas in scientific studies or medicine.
　　It is my goal to make strides in using cooking as a tool for more effective learning. I hope to have a kindergarten full of kids with a love for cooking. Until next time!
