10月1日（土）の第４回子育て支援日「おとうさまと遊ぼう」には、たくさんのお父さまがご参加くださり、また10月17日（月）〜21日（金）に行われた絵本の読み聞かせweekでは、たくさんのお母さまがご参加くださり、本当にありがとうございました。子育て支援日では、お子さまがシュートしたボールに颯爽と飛び込んだり、すもうで後ろに大きく倒れたり、野球ボールの打ち方、鉄棒の回り方、カルタのルールを子どもの目線で熱心に教えてくださる、心の温かい、頼もしいお父さまの姿に職員一同ただただ感動いたしました。絵本の読み聞かせでは、お母さまの優しい声と話し方にどんどん物語の世界に引き込まれているお子さま達が印象的でした。自分の親が都合で来られないお子さまも、たくさんのお父さま、お母さまとかかわることができ、普段の幼稚園生活ではみせない「家の顔」を覗かせてくれたお子さま達。やはりお子さまにとっての「一番」は大好きな「家族」。幼稚園では先生や友達と一緒に生活する中で様々なことを学んでいますが、ある意味「おもての顔」で、自分でやらなくては、と頑張っているのが幼稚園での姿。家へ帰って大好きな家族と過ごすお子さま達は心底安心し、その中で心がリセットされ、次への「おもて」での挑戦、やる気を育くんでいるということを実感いたしました。

　さて、今年度は年中･年長組を対象に、スタンダードクラスも、イマージョンクラスも“Immersion Day”をイベントとして設け、希望者だけではありますが一日外国籍教員と過ごす、という活動を行いました。その中でお子さまの素晴らしい力を感じたのが“listening”力と、“Imagination”力です。幼稚園生活の中で朝から帰りまでほぼ外国籍教員とかかわる環境にあるインターナショナル山の手幼稚園。普段の生活の中ではやはり日本語、英語がどちらも飛び交い、日本人の友達や先生と話す時はもちろん「日本語」そして外国籍教員とは知っている「英語」と使い分けているお子さま達ですが、All Englishの環境においてはEnglishをしっかり聞き取り、指示の通り行動し、英語の劇では物語をよく理解して楽しむ、お子さま達の“listening”力の高さに驚かされました。ただし、そこには“Imagination”力もとても重要で、知っている知識も単語量もまだまだ少ないお子さま達がたくさんの英語を聞いて理解したり、楽しんだりできるのは、外国籍教員の表情、身振り、手振り、外国籍教員同士の英語のやり取り、その時に使われている絵やもの、自分の知っている英単語、耳から聞く英語とその周りを取り巻く環境をよく観察し、イメージを膨らませ、理解をしているということです。その力は大人のそれと比べものにならないくらい、大きく、幼児期特有の力と言えるでしょう。

　菅原孝悦園長先生がバイリンガル教育を進めるにあたり大切にしてきたことは「英語をことばとしてとらえ、教科として考えない」こと。つまり、英語を教えるのではなく母国語と同じ生活会話の中で、ことばの発達の仕方と同じ方法で英語を習得させていこう、ということです。
そしてもう一つが、「英語はやさしいことばで、話せると生きる世界が広がる」ということを実感すること。今のお子さま達はまさに英語を「英語」として捉えず、外国籍教員と話す際のツールとして楽しく使い、学んでいるように感じます。

　11月末に行われるHyogen Festivalでは、どの学年も英語に触れる発表があります。英語を楽しむお子さま達をどうぞお楽しみにしていてください。

I would like to give a big show of thanks to fathers who attended the fourth Mother Support Day on October 1st, as well as all of the parents who came to visit us for Storytime Week from October 17th-21st.

It was very moving to see the fathers teaching things like how to play karuta, or use an iron bar, or even play baseball and catch, along with making for interesting sumo wrestling partners. During storytime, it was easy to see the kids being pulled in by the kind voices of the mothers reading. Even with children whose parents could not attend, it was a brief glimpse into how they spend their time at home . For children, their real “favorite” really must be their “family”. They learn a lot of things here at the kindergarten with their teachers and friends, but in some respects that is merely their “outside” persona. With their time at home each day, the children are able to relax and feel safe, ready to use that “outside” persona again the next day.

By now, the “Immersion Day” events, where the children spend an entire day doing activities together with only overseas teachers, for Intermediate and Senior classes (both Standard and Immersion) have ended. Two things the children did exceptionally well on these days was use great listening ability, and a wonderful sense of imagination. Here at Interionational Yamanote Kindergarten, the children really do interact with overseas teachers from the time they arrive in the morning, until riding the bus to go home in the afternoon. All day long, there are English and Japanese conversations taking place. The children use Japanese with their friends and teachers, while trying their best to use the English they know with overseas teachers. Because of this, they are able to do what they’re told, communicate their feelings, and even watch plays in English and enjoy them!

The children’s imagination plays a big part too. Using it they are able to compare their own knowledge with what they are hearing in English, and relating it to the actions, dances, gestures, and so forth of the overseas teachers, capture the meaning of what is going on. It could be said that their ability to imagine something like this far dwarfs that of an adult. I was very surprised.

Our principal, Sugawara Koetsu, imagines the learning of English as “Something to be learned as words, not as a subject.” What this means is that rather than approaching it as another type of school subject, it should be used naturally within the environment, to facilitate gathering the meaning.Another one of his mantras is that “English is a kind language, that can open the world to you.” The children at IYK don’t even think of English as a thing to learn, so much as a tool they use in communicating with the overseas teachers they love.

Coming in November, each grade will incorporate English into their Hyogen Festival presentations. Please look forward to them.
