雨の日が続き、なかなかからっとしない天候が続いております。幼稚園では、マイコプラズマ肺炎やアデノウイルス、胃腸炎などにかかっているお子さまがちらほらでてきました。寒かったり暑かったりと気温が安定しておりませんので、体調には十分お気をつけください。

　先日は、参観日にご参観いただき、ありがとうございました。いつもの幼稚園の雰囲気と違い、またご父母さまも一緒にいる、ということで、年少組は泣いて離れられなかったり、活動に参加できなかったりするお子さまもいましたが、年中組は、朝少し泣いていたものの、体操が始まるとすっとクラスに戻り、活動には伸び伸びと参加したり、年長組は、「僕･私をみて」と言わんばかりに、堂々と活動に参加する姿が見られ、さすが年長組は『自律心』が育っていることを改めて感じました。参観日で我が子の様子を見て、「何で先生の話を聞いていないんだろう」「落ち着いて座ってほしい」などマイナスの面が気になったご父母さまもいるかもしれませんが、普段の幼稚園生活では、どのお子さまも進級当初の4月と比べ、すっかり環境に慣れ、遊びを楽しみ、友達とかかわりながら一つひとつの活動に意欲的に参加しております。どうぞご安心ください。

　さて、普段お子さま達は色々なものを見て、聞いて、触って、たくさんのことを経験しています。特に３歳から４歳の時期は、「これは何？」「○○は何でこうなるの？」と一つひとつを知ることが楽しくて仕方がない時期です。大好きな恐竜の図鑑を持ってきて、「これはトリケラトプス」「これはジュラ紀に生きていたんだけど、隕石が落ちてきて絶滅して･･･」と大人顔負けの知識量にびっくりさせられることもあります。大人が今から覚えるには、必死になって勉強しなければならないようなことを、お子さまは、たくさんの情報量をあっという間に覚えてしまいます。このように様々なことに興味をもっている時期に伸ばしてあげたい心が「好奇心」です。お子さま達がもつ「好奇心」を、本や図鑑で調べ、さらに実際に見たり触ったりとリアルな体験をすると、ワクワクした気持ちが続き、また「知ること」に純粋な喜びや楽しさを感じ、それがより強い刺激になって脳を成長させ、さらに「もっと知りたい」という知識欲へとつながっていきます。

このようなワクワク感、知る楽しさを感じることは、後の学校教育で自分で勉強を進める上でとても大切なベースになります。しかも、この３〜４歳の時期を過ぎると、次に「好き･嫌い」「面白い･面白くない」と自分で判断してしまう時期がきてしまうので、様々なことに興味をもつ、というところが制限されてしまいます。大事な幼児期、特に年少〜年中組にかけては、お子さまとたくさん話をして、たくさん本や図鑑に触れ、草花や動物などに触れる直接体験を大切にしていきたいですね。
　あと２週間で、一学期が終了します。７月は年長組、そして年中組は宿泊体験学習にチャレンジです。ご父母さまから離れて、友達や先生と過ごし、自分で身支度や準備をする『自立』の経験は、お子さま達がさらに自信をもち、ステップアップする経験になるでしょう。

普段できない経験を通して、また一回り大きくなるお子さまを共にサポートしてまいりましょう。

There have been a lot of rainy, moist days recently. At the kindergarten, a number of infectious diseases have popped up here and there. With hot and cold days alternating like this, it is important to take care of one’s health.

I would like to thank everyone who came out to observe the Open Class days this month. With an atmosphere slightly different from a normal day, some children in the junior classes would cry or cling to their parents, while some didn’t take part in class activities. Intermediates, however, shook off their tears in the morning, and by the time exercise came to a close, were rearing to get back to class and see what activities were in store. Senior class students jumped right in to class activities, showing their independence as well as maturity. There might have been some parents who watched the Open Class and thought “Why isn’t my child listening?”, or “I just wish they would sit down.”, only focusing on the negatives. Please don’t worry, as each and every child has made a lot of progress since April, and is taking part in class activities and playtime with aplomb.

Every day, the children are seeing, hearing, touching, and experiencing a variety of things. At 3 and 4 years old, they just love to know what things are or how they change. Sometimes they are knowledgeable enough of things to embarrass even an adult. Children can remember in a flash what it would take an adult forever to study. The important thing to do is foster their curiosity during this period. Helping them to investigate something, using books or picture dictionaries, generates more interest. Linking this interest to experiencing the actual thing increases the effect further, easing the acquisition of knowledge. This in turn leads to a happy feeling, and a thirst for more knowledge.

This feeling of accomplishment, and the happiness in learning something new, is something that children would normally have to foster by themselves. As they get older, the next thing that kids begin to think about is “Like/Dislike” and “Interesting/Boring”, meaning it is important to help them get interested in as many things as possible. This period between Junior and Intermediate years is an invaluable chance to expose the children to many things that might interest them in the future, like different subjects, plants, and animals.

This term will end in almost two weeks. Senior and Intermediate classes will take on the challenge of an overnight stay this month. It will be a great chance to gain independence away from their parents, spending time with their friends, and growing as people. We as teachers will give them all of the support we can to help them grow.
